Description
This site was created by Science NetLinks in conjunction with the 2010 White House Easter Egg Roll. It serves as an online component to a hands-on activity where kids observe the life cycle of a plant. Kids will learn about the parts of a seed and how to plant and care for their seeds, track growth progress, and share data with others. Children can upload photos of their seeds and plants, write observation notes, and see how kids from all over the country are growing plants. The Science of Spring also includes a collection of Science NetLinks resources related to seeds, plants, and spring.
Using the Resource
This resource would work well in a biology lesson, introducing students to the life cycle of plants and providing hands-on experience. The exploration could start by looking at a wide variety of seeds and asking kids to discuss what types of seeds they come across in everyday life. Then they could identify the parts of a seed using diagrams or dissecting seeds in the classroom. You can discuss which parts of the seed become the leaves, roots, and stem as it grows and what a seed needs in order to become a plant.
Students can view plant photos and read the observation notes entered by other kids. This can motivate them to try planting their own seeds. Have them follow the planting instructions and encourage them to take notes of how their seeds change into seedlings and then larger plants. This can be supplemented with photos or drawings of their observations that can be shared in class or on the website. You could discuss as a class how the environment in which the seed is grown affects the plant and try growing seeds in different areas or with varying amounts of light.
